Hard Water Stains

Hard water stains (HWS) are caused by the minerals that are found in our normal drinking and irrigation water.  If the water sits on the glass for any length of time, it starts a kind of chemical reaction with the surface of the glass.  One mis-aligned sprinkler that hits a window regularly can ruin it in a mater of a few months.

Not all windows can be saved, but most can, if the HWS process is stopped in time.  To repair your HWS windows, I use special chemicals and equipment to remove the stains from your glass.  Then I'll apply a protectant to help seal the window from further damage.

This is one more reason why I recommend having your windows cleaned regularly.  When HWS
damage is found and repaired in time, it can save you a lot of money in window replacement costs.

Of course, the most important part of the HWS repair is making sure your irrigation or pool water doesn't hit the window anymore.  If it does, the HWS may come back, even with a protectant applied to  the glass.

Preventing Scratches on Glass

Scratches on glass can be a real problem so it's better to try to prevent them from occurring in the first place.  Sometimes the scratches can be polished off.  However, the cost of doing that can be almost as much as having the glass replaced.  Either way, it can be very expensive.

One major problem in the glass industry is that some glass manufactures have been selling tempered glass with microscopic defects called 'fabricating debris'.  You can't see them but your razor blade scraper will find them.  Once dislodged they travel with your scraper blade and scratch your windows.

The glass industry fix for this issue is to state that 'window scrapers are not to be used to clean their windows'.  That's fine as long as there's no paint, plaster, or anything else that won't come off with regular window washing.  The only real fix for this issue is to buy better glass next time.  Let the buyer beware.

So how do you prevent most scratches from occurring while cleaning your windows?  I don't have the space here to go into all the details, but here's a few tips you can use:

1. Don't use colored kitchen scrub pads to clean your glass.  The colored pads have abrasives in them and that will scratch your windows.
However, the white ones are usually safe to use.

2. When you paint, plaster or do any construction around your home, cover your windows.  I'm sure you've heard this before, 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'.

3. If you do get paint, plaster, etc. on your glass don't scrape it off dry.  Wet the window with a soapy solution (dish soap and water) before you use a scraper.

4. The very best way to prevent scratches on your windows is to have an experienced professional clean them for you.

My Story

Back in 2003 I was having some health issues involving my work as a construction equipment mechanic so I took an early retirement at the age of 47.  Around that time I met a neighbor who owned a window cleaning business.  He showed me the ropes (so to speak) and helped me to start Window Magic.  We've been friends ever since and continue to refer work to each other.

I got most of my first clients by walking neighborhoods and passing out my business cards.  8000 cards later I was getting calls*.  I don't advertise anymore.  Most of my new clients are referrals from my current ones.  I'm up to around 700 now.

*A new record was set the other day by 'Emy' in Claremont.  She kept the card I left on her door for SEVEN YEARS and finally called me to come out and clean her windows!  Thanks Emy!

I like to play steel tip darts in my spare time and I have turned that hobby into a business as well.  I sell dart supplies to local players in the area as well as having three dart supply display cases in local pubs.  I also run a couple of blind draw dart tournaments each week.

I'm single, I have three grown daughters, all living on their own, and one noisy cat, who lives with me. Does anyone want a free cat?
